Minister Acknowledges Problems At Norwich Pension Service Office

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 7th Jul 2003

The Pensions Minister, Malcolm Wicks, today acknowledged that there are problems with a backlog of unprocessed benefits claims at the Norwich offices of the Pension Service.

His admission came in response to a question from the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, Norman Lamb, during Work and Pensions Questions in the Commons today.

Malcolm Wicks said he accepted that there are particular delays in dealing with claims at the Norwich centre, and apologised for the unacceptable standard of service being received by claimants in Norfolk as a result. He stated that he would be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Commenting afterwards, Norman Lamb said: "I was pleased to receive such an open and honest answer from the Minister. The Government now needs to back this up with the action necessary to effect improvements."
