MP Highlights Local Transport Concerns12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 24th Jun 2003 Norman Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk, has raised concerns relating to transport issues in Norfolk during a debate in the House of Commons instigated by the Liberal Democrats. He highlighted the problems being faced by community transport operators, and also failures of infrastructure on the main Norwich-London railway line. "Community transport represents a vital local resource," said Mr Lamb. "However, they are not commercial services, and as such require outside support to make them viable. The North Walsham Area Community Transport Association is a perfect example - its initial three-year funding from the Countryside Agency is coming to an end. The Government needs to recognise the contribution made to rural areas by community transport operators, and ensure that these services are not put in jeopardy. "On the subject of the Norwich-London railway line, it is clear that this - as with so many other rail services across the country - has suffered from a long history of under-investment. The line is overcrowded and suffers too many failures of basic infrastructure. I am not sure whether the Government appreciates the level of disruption being suffered by commuters, while Network Rail's management leaves a lot to be desired." "This country's public transport system needs a full-time Secretary of State at its helm, rather than one whose work is split between this and another job, if things are to improve."
