Boost for Biofuels for Off Road Use

9.13.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 9th Oct 2003

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has uncovered a little known rule which allows off-road uses of biodiesel to claim back most of the fuel duty from Customs and Excise.

Mr Lamb took up the issue of duty reduction on behalf of Peter Howe who uses bio-diesel in his boats on the Norfolk Broads.

The reply he received from Treasury Minister John Healey MP confirms entitlement to the rebate.

Norman Lamb said: "When Peter Howe enquired about this with Customs and Excise they knew nothing about it, but they have now confirmed that the rebate can be claimed".

Mr Lamb has been campaigning for larger duty reductions for biofuels to pump prime a new green industry.
