Blair Accepts that Council Tax is Flawed following Lamb's Question4.28.04pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 10th Dec 2003 Tony Blair today responded to a question from Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, regarding the Audit Commission's recent report on Council Tax. Commenting on Mr Blair's response, Norman Lamb said: "By accepting the Audit Commission's report, he is also accepting that council tax is fundamentally flawed. The inevitable consequence of this is that council tax must be scrapped, and replaced with a fairer alternative based on an ability to pay." Norman Lamb asked the first question at today's session of Prime Minister's Questions. The Audit Commission's report highlighted the deficiency of a system where 75% of local government funding is provided by Whitehall. Liberal Democrat's would replace council tax with a Local Income Tax. Related Links:Sign The Petition to Axe The Tax!
