Closure of RAF Neatishead would have 'serious implications'

2.53.39pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 15th Jan 2004

Norman Lamb has written to the RAF expressing his concerns over the possible closure of RAF Neatishead.

Mr Lamb said: "I consider that there is a strong case for the retention of RAF Neatishead. The base clearly has a very positive impact on the local economy and closure of the base would have serious implications for this part of Norfolk. It is clear to me that any of the options which would involve the closure of RAF Neatishead together with other bases would be very costly to implement."

Mr Lamb is concerned that the site could be left in a similar situation to that at West Raynham: "Because of the limited development potential of RAF Neatishead, there must be a significant risk that the site could effectively become derelict and remain in such a position for a long period of time. This should be avoided at all cost."
