Lamb to challenge Minister over development of biofuels industry

5.45.04pm GMT Tue 3rd Feb 2004

Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, will be pressing the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to give more support to the biofuels industry when he puts a question to her this Thursday, 5 February.

Mr Lamb has been a constant campaigner for the development of the biofuels industry, from which Norfolk could benefit substantially, since being elected.

He said: "If we want to reduce carbon emissions to help meet our Kyoto targets, biofuels can play an important role. Government support was acknowledged in the Pre-Budget Report and in its response to the DEFRA Select Committee report on biofuels.

"Now, the Government needs to take action to achieve the EU target of 2 per cent biofuel usage in road fuels, and yet there is no mention of biofuels in the new Energy Bill. An amendment needs to be introduced in order to achieve this."
