Lamb Repeats Calls to Axe the Council Tax Following Announcement of Tax Rises in Norfolk This Week

12.07.03am GMT Sat 28th Feb 2004

At the end of a week of announcements of council tax rises throughout Norfolk, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk Norman Lamb has repeated calls for the abolition of council tax.

Mr Lamb said: "The council tax is a regressive tax which takes no account of ability to pay. The rises in council tax, which many Norfolk councils have confirmed this week, will hit people on fixed incomes, such as pensioners, the hardest. The independent Audit Commission concluded before Christmas that most of the responsibility for increases rested with the Government. The Government must now listen to the rising calls to replace this unfair tax."
