MP asks for update on RAF Coltishall's future

10.25.00am GMT Wed 10th Mar 2004

Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, Norman Lamb, has asked the Ministry of Defence to update him on the future of RAF Coltishall.

At present, the station's future role is unclear as the Jaguar aircraft currently based there are to be retired when the new Eurofighter Typhoon enters service. The Typhoon will not be based at Coltishall. However, the Typhoon programme is continuing to experience delays, and production of a third 'tranche' of aircraft which have been ordered has been called into question. So far, only two Typhoons have been delivered to the RAF. The slippage of the timetable for the Typhoon may have implications for the future of RAF Coltishall.

"I would like to see more clarity with regard to the future of RAF Coltishall," said Norman Lamb.

"With the delays and cost over-runs that the Eurofighter Typhoon programme is suffering, I am seeking clarification as to whether the Jaguars are to remain in service for longer than expected. At present, they are due to be phased out in 2008-10 but if Typhoon deliveries are further delayed, and the order for them cut back, it is possible that this date could slip.

"Already, there are fears for the future of RAF Neatishead. If the MoD decides to close Coltishall after the Jaguars are retired and Neatishead as part of its current review, the economic impact on the area would be serious. It is important to reassure people connected with Coltishall that we are talking about decisions some years ahead. I hope that the MoD will be able to offer some clarification as to when the Jaguars are going to leave Coltishall and what will happen afterwards."
