Norman Lamb challenges the Government over FE colleges funding11.18.24am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 19th May 2004 Norman Lamb led a debate in Parliament yesterday on the funding gap between FE colleges and school sixth forms. Mr Lamb called on the Government to meet their commitment to close this gap and make funding for FE colleges equal to funding for school sixth forms. "FE colleges are far and away the major supplier of education to 16-18 year olds," Norman Lamb pointed out, "but schools are approximately 10% better funded. That means FE colleges up to £1000 less a year for each student studying 3 A levels - a really significant shortfall." "I know that FE colleges in Norfolk perform a central role in educating 16-19 year olds," Mr Lamb added, "and they also provide vital access to classes for adults, particularly those with basic numeracy and literacy needs. It is really essential that FE colleges and their students get a fair deal." Norman Lamb said. "27% of FE college students come from the 15 most deprived wards in the country and now they are being short changed by the education system. I am calling on the Government to fulfil their commitment and close this funding gap now."
