Public meeting to discuss future of council tax9.01.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 21st Sep 2004 Norman Lamb has organised a public meeting to discuss issues relating to council tax. Mr Lamb will be chairing a panel debate next month, and will be joined by Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet Member Ed Davey MP (responsible for Office of Deputy Prime Minister), North Norfolk District Council leader Simon Partridge, and Linda Gill, Information, Advice and Advocacy Manager of Age Concern Norfolk. "There is a great deal of frustration amongst people in North Norfolk about the council tax system," said Mr Lamb. "It is fundamentally unfair, because it is not based on ability to pay. By organising this meeting, I am hoping to give people in North Norfolk the opportunity to have their say on whether council tax needs to be replaced, and what should replace it." Earlier in the week, the Liberal Democrats launched their pre-manifesto document for the next General Election, which includes replacing Council Tax with a Local Income Tax based on ability to pay. WHEN: 4 October 2004, 7:30 WHERE: Cromer WI Hall, Garden Street, Cromer NR27 9HN WHO: Norman Lamb (Chair), Ed Davey MP, Cllr Simon Partridge (NNDC), Linda Gill (Age Concern Norfolk) WHAT: Public meeting to discuss the future of council tax.
