Lamb Challenges Prime Minister on Police Funding7.25.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 27th Oct 2004 Norman Lamb, speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, today challenged Tony Blair on the issue of police funding. Mr Lamb asked: "The Prime Minister will be aware that Norfolk Police Authority, along with many others, faces a serious funding shortfall next year at the same time as yet more bureaucratic burdens are imposed by the Home Office. Will the Prime Minister give a guarantee that front line policing will not suffer as a result?" The Prime Minister responded by saying he wanted to build on extra investment in police numbers, not diminish it. Speaking afterwards, Mr Lamb said: "My concern is that Norfolk Police are facing massive extra pension costs resulting from a bulge in retiring police numbers. At the same time, the bureaucratic demands of the Home Office keep increasing. It is essential that Norfolk Police, who are performing extremely well in key areas, do not face cutbacks."
