Norman Lamb calls for update to corporate manslaughter legislation in wake of Hatfield rail crash verdict

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 6th Sep 2005

Commenting on the decision today that Network Rail has been found guilty of breaching health and safety legislation over the Hatfield rail crash, Norman Lamb stated, "Where companies such as Network Rail have obviously breached the health and safety legislation, it is good to see a successful prosecution."

"However it still currently remains far too difficult to successfully prosecute companies for breaching these rules," he continued. "It is time that the legislation was updated and that a system is introduced that would also result in the directors of such companies being held to account."

Norman is Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for Trade and Industry.
