Gas Suppliers Lack Competition5.11.16pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 23rd Feb 2006 Responding to British Gas' announcement today of an 11% rise in operating profit to £1.5m for last year, Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "These profits come in the context of British Gas' decision to raise its prices by 22% from March. The company's belief that price rises will be borne by customers reflects British Gas' dominance in the marketplace. The UK energy market is insufficiently liberalised to offer consumers protection from further price rises and must be made accessible to new entrants in order to foster greater competition." "I support Energywatch's call for greater scrutiny of the UK Market as well as that of the European energy market."
