TACKLING SUPERBUGS REQUIRES ONGOING ZERO-TOLERANCE APPROACH NOT JUST A ONE-OFF CLEAN UP - LAMB7.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 23rd Sep 2007 Responding to Gordon Brown's announcement in Sunday's News of the World that every hospital in England is set to be 'deep cleaned' in an effort to tackle hospital acquired infections, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP said: "It makes perfect sense to clean all areas in hospitals where infections may linger, but why hasn't this been done before?" "We've had years of ineffective tinkering and complacency around the problem of tackling superbugs like MRSA and C Difficile." "An ongoing zero-tolerance approach against hospital acquired infections is needed, not just a one-off clean-up. A serious change of culture within hospitals and care homes will have more of an impact than grand gestures on providing a lasting solution to this problem." "Hospitals and care homes should be putting in place best practice guidance from abroad on how best to tackle these deadly infections."
