JUNIOR DOCTOR DEBACLE MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AGAIN - LAMB

4.11.28pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 8th Oct 2007

Commenting on today's report of the Independent Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers, led by Sir John Tooke, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP said:

"This report is a truly damning indictment of the Government's attempts to reform the handling of junior doctor recruitment.

"Ministers must heed this stark warning and make changes immediately. The system was doomed from the outset, with no piloting and flawed central direction.

"The crisis could - and should - have been avoided. Instead, a generation of junior doctors has been let down and left disillusioned. Many have even left the country or the profession, representing a criminal waste of talent.

"The Government has many questions left to answer. What reassurances can it give that this won't happen again next year? What will happen to overseas doctors and those in temporary training positions? How much has this whole debacle cost?"
