MENTAL HEALTH FUNDING LONG OVERDUE - LAMB

3.03.38pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 10th Oct 2007

Responding to today's statement from the Health Secretary announcing extra money for "talking treatments" for depression and anxiety in England, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP said: "Measures to fund therapies for those suffering mental health problems are long overdue."

"Too often, people are left languishing on benefits rather than receiving the treatment they need to regain control over their lives. Yet we are still none the wiser about Brown's 'grand vision' for the NHS."

"How are we going to ensure that the tightened health budgets will be spent on patient care rather than centralised bureaucracy?"

"The Government is being shamefully slow at tackling the scandal of funding for elderly care. We need immediate action to tackle the terrible unfairness of people losing everything as result of personal care costs."
